Financial Advisers in Hertford

Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, and it has the varied mix of residents you would expect: people working in local government and public services, professionals, owners of independent shops and firms, and families who have chosen it for its schools and its character. We advise all of them, from our base a short drive east in Roydon.

Planning in the county town

Hertford sits where four rivers meet: the Lea, the Beane, the Mimram and the Rib. It is part of the East Hertfordshire district, and Hertfordshire County Council is based in the town. Two stations serve it: Hertford East, at the end of the branch line through Ware and Broxbourne to London Liverpool Street, and Hertford North, on the Hertford Loop towards Moorgate and King’s Cross.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, here is how we tend to help the different groups of people we meet from Hertford.

If you work in the public sector

Many people in and around Hertford work for the county council, the NHS, schools or other public bodies. That often means membership of a defined benefit scheme such as the Local Government Pension Scheme or the NHS Pension Scheme, which pays an income based on your salary and service rather than investment returns.

These pensions are valuable, and the questions we are asked are usually about how they fit with everything else: when you might be able to retire, whether to make additional contributions, how your scheme pension works alongside the State Pension and any private savings, and what your family would receive if you died. Our guide to the value of retirement planning is a good primer, and our pensions and retirement page sets out how we help.

If you run a business or a practice

Hertford has plenty of owner-run businesses, from shops and restaurants to accountancy, legal and property firms. Directors and partners often have most of their wealth tied up in the business, so it pays to think about what would happen if one of the owners were no longer there. Business protection can provide the funds for the remaining owners to buy out a departing owner’s share. See our shareholder protection guide.

If you are buying, moving or remortgaging

Kealy Ball, our mortgage broker, searches across a wide range of lenders. If your fixed rate is coming to an end, our remortgage guide explains what to consider, and the mortgages page covers buying and moving too. When a mortgage changes, it is a sensible moment to check your life and critical illness cover still matches it.

If you want to invest

For money you will not need for at least five years, investing may give it the chance to grow, but with risk. We take time to understand your goals and attitude to risk, and recommend from across the market.

Planning as a couple

Hertford households often have two incomes and two quite different pensions: perhaps a public sector scheme for one partner and a private workplace or personal pension for the other. Planning them separately can lead to odd results, such as one partner being able to retire years before the other, or one pension carrying all the risk.

Looking at both together lets you answer the questions that really matter: when could you both stop work, what income would you have together, and what would happen to the surviving partner’s income if one of you died? Defined benefit schemes often pay a pension to a surviving spouse or partner; many private pensions can pass to beneficiaries too. Understanding those details is part of building a joint plan.

If you have additional savings, an investment overview can help you see how ISAs and other investments might sit alongside your pensions.

Important — the risks

The performance of your investments is subject to risk. Its performance may fluctuate based on movements in the market and economic conditions. Capital is at risk. Currency movements may also affect the value of investments. You may get back less than you originally invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Tax treatment is based on an individual’s unique circumstances and may be subject to change.

A pension is a long-term investment — the fund value may fluctuate and can go down, and your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

Think carefully before securing debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it. Please note that some mortgages, such as commercial buy-to-lets, are not regulated by the FCA.
